If you work part-time
The status of residence of "College Student" is for studying in Japan. Therefore, if you wish to work part-time, you must apply for a work permit (Permission to Engage in Activity Other than that Permitted Under the Status of Residence Previously Granted) at the immigration office.

How to apply
Please prepare the following three items and have a consultation with the International Affairs Section before going to the Immigration Bureau to apply. After that, please apply in person at the Koriyama immigration office. If you are only applying for a work permit (and not a visa extension, etc.), the permit will be granted on the same day.
Passport
Residence Card
Time limits
The law requires that activities outside of the status of residence (e.g., part-time work) be limited to 28 hours per week.
(these limits are relaxed to eight hours per day and 40 hours per week during summer, winter, and spring vacation)
Those who work part-time beyond these limits will be subject to penalties including deportation, fines, and imprisonment.
Limits on part-time employers
Part-time work in the adult entertainment business is prohibited. This includes washing dishes, cleaning, and other jobs in places where adult entertainment businesses are conducted.
Part-time work on campus
Regular students with a "College Student" status of residence do not need a work permit to work as Student Assistants (SA), Teaching Assistants (TA), or Research Assistants (RA) at the university. However, students who are SAs, TAs, RAs, or both TAs and RAs at the university may only work a total of 28 hours per week including activities outside of the status of residence (e.g. part-time jobs off campus).
*In principle, non-regular students (including exchange students) cannot work as TAs or RAs, but if circumstances require them to be employed, they must obtain a work permit.
*Full-time students who wish to perform work other than that of an SA, TA, or RA on campus must apply for a work permit.

For unpaid internships: No special application is required.
For paid internships: Regardless of whether the internship is part of a University course, you must file an application for a Permission to Engage in Activity Other than that Permitted Under the Status of Residence Previously Granted. Click here for information on how to apply.
Maximum Work Hours
During class periods: no more than 28 hours per week
During summer, winter and spring holidays: no more than 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week
Internship in excess of 28 hours per week during class periods:
In addition to the Application for Permission to Engage in Activity Other than that Permitted Under the Status of Residence Previously Granted, you must apply for an special work permit (Permission to Engage in Activities Other Than That Permitted under the Status of Residence of more than 28 Hours per Week). However, there are certain conditions for applying for an extended work permit, and only those who are eligible may apply.

If you are taking a leave of absence from the university to participate in an internship: You cannot stay in Japan under the status of residence of "College Student" in this case. Please change your status of residence to an appropriate one. Contact the company where you will do your internship or the Immigration Services Agency regarding the appropriate status of residence.
If the internship is overseas, return your residence card at the airport when you leave Japan. Please note that you will need to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) again upon your return to school. Click "here" to jump to the application page.
