Those Without a Status of Residence (Those Residing Outside Japan)
◇ Procedures to Enter Japan
To enter Japan, you must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) issued by the designated Regional Immigration Bureau in Japan and obtain a visa from your nearest Japanese embassy or consulate-general.
If you are a foreign national residing abroad, the University will apply for a COE on your behalf, as it is difficult to apply yourself. Upon receiving a COE from the University, apply for a visa at your nearest Japanese embassy or consulate-general, etc. and have the visa placed in your passport. Upon arrival in Japan, present your COE and visa to an immigration officer and receive permission to enter Japan under the status of residence "Student."
◇ Application for COE
The University submits applications on behalf of overseas residents in the order that they complete their enrollment procedures, once all required COE application documents are prepared. Issuance of the COE normally takes six to ten weeks from the date of application. Therefore, if you wish to apply by proxy, please complete the enrollment procedures well in advance. Please note that six to ten weeks is only an estimate. As the document review is conducted by the Regional Immigration Bureau, the University cannot provide information about matters such as exactly when you will receive your COE. The University will not be responsible for any delay or denial of COE issuance as a result of the screening process.
◇ Visa Application
Upon receiving your COE, apply for a visa at the nearest Japanese embassy or consulate-general. If you have any questions regarding the required documents, processing time, etc., contact the Japanese embassy or consulate-general where you plan to apply.
Attention!
- Your COE will become invalid if you do not present it with your visa to an immigration officer and receive landing permission within three months from the date of issuance.
- The University will only apply on your behalf for a COE for a "Student" status of residence. For other statuses of residence, please apply at the designated Regional Immigration Bureau yourself.
