In case of leave of absence or withdrawal

International students who take a leave of absence or withdraw from a school are not allowed to stay in Japan under the status of "College Student." Please leave Japan in a timely manner or change your status of residence to an appropriate one. Students taking a leave of absence must complete the "special reentry permit" procedures when departing Japan, or obtain a reentry permit before leaving Japan. If you fail to do so, you will have to start the visa application process over again.

In the case of withdrawal, you must submit a "Notification Concerning the Accepting Organization (Left the organization)" to the immigration office within 14 days of withdrawing.

Please refer to the following website for information on how to submit the form.

In case of resuming studies

International students who plan to leave Japan for less than 12 months before returning should complete the special reentry permit procedures at the airport when you leave Japan.

Students who plan to stay leave Japan for than 12 months must apply for a reentry permit at the Koriyama Branch Office of the Sendai Immigration Bureau before leaving Japan. Re-entry will be possible until the expiration date of the residence card in your possession. The reentry permit will be issued on the same day.

Depending on the length of the leave of absence and the expiration date of the residence card in your possession, you may have to reapply for a status of residence.

If you are going to study abroad

If you take a leave of absence to study abroad: Your student visa is subject to revocation, so please be sure to complete the "special reentry permit" procedure at the airport when you leave Japan if you are leaving for a period of less than 12 months.

If you remain enrolled while studying abroad: If you are scheduled to participate in a University of Aizu study abroad program, you will remain enrolled at the UoA while studying abroad at the partner university. This is treated the same as a temporary departure from Japan. If you are leaving Japan for a period of less than 12 months, please be sure to complete "special reentry permit" procedures at the airport when you leave Japan.

Temporary departure from Japan

Please complete the special reentry permit procedures at the airport.

However, if you do not re-enter the country within one year of your departure, you will lose your status of residence.

Please note that if your period of stay is less than one year after your departure, you must re-enter Japan before the expiration date of your stay.
