AI

AI as an Identity of the University of Aizu

The University of Aizu was founded as a university specializing in computer science and engineering, and AI is its identity, with a number of research teams, or "clusters," conducting various research in different fields with AI as a pillar. In addition, through wide-ranging collaboration with other fields, research and development of specific applications of AI are also being actively pursued. The goal is to realize globally competitive goods and services; AI can be used as the best technology to achieve the SDGs. By incorporating AI into the field of sociology, we should be able to make both the earth and people's lives more affluent.

Features of research in the field of AI at the University of Aizu

Various research clusters formed around AI

The University of Aizu started as a university specializing in computer science and engineering, and in the significance and meaning of the 100 researchers gathered here, we must emphasize AI more than any other university, and AI is now the identity of the University of Aizu.

With AI as one pillar, there are a number of other studies to support this.

Compared to conventional laboratories, the University of Aizu has formed "clusters" of research teams that are more dynamical and are conducting research in different fields. For example, "Intelligent Networking" is researching intelligent networking that incorporates elements of artificial intelligence, which is an application of AI, so to speak. In "Automatic AI System Design," AI is used to design AI. The University of Aizu has a number of such clusters.

Collaborating with universities around the world to promote applications

As mentioned above, AI as a discipline is deepened daily by many clusters, but to actually help people, it will be necessary to partner with other fields. By partnering with experts in the field, we can define our goals and create an ideal match of the technologies we have fostered. We should be able to realize globally competitive products and services.

The University of Aizu has established various partnerships with about 100 universities around the world, and exchanges students and professors. While the focus has been on ICT, in the future we would like to promote collaboration in a wider range of fields, such as medical schools, humanities, and economics, where we are closer in terms of application. Some results in applied fields, such as research on artificial intelligence-based image processing for colon fiber in collaboration with medical schools, are beginning to emerge.

Eventually, AI will become the central nervous system of society

Until now, applications have been "props," so to speak. However, as indicated in Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0, the central idea from now on will be "connectivity. In this context, AI will play a role similar to that of the central nervous system in the human body.

Think of "gadgets" as functional modules, and connect them all together to form a single "life form. The mechanism of this "life form" is the Internet and IOT. Things are also connected. Like the human body, the functions of hands, feet, and head are all organically connected. It will be possible to view the entire planet as a single living organism.

Until now, society has consumed an unlimited amount of resources for the sake of development. AI is the best technology to realize the SDGs.
