The Journal of the International Phonetic Association published an article authored by Prof. J. Perkins (Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa), Prof. S. J. Lee (International Christian University), and Prof. Julián Villegas (University of Aizu) * in Apr. 2025, titled "The interaction between tone and duration in Du'an Zhuang."
This article describes the tonal system of a dialect not previously documented in phonetic detail using state-of-the-art analysis techniques including generalized additive modeling of f0 across multiple speakers. This analysis allowed a contribution to the further understanding of how tonal complexity (the contrastive use of pitch in language) interacts with vocalic duration.
