As of February 26, 2025, the University of Aizu's accreditation was renewed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for "Joint Usage and Research Center" (*1, *2).
○Name of the Center: "Lunar and Planetary Exploration Archive Science Center"
○Certification Period: April 1, 2025 - March 31, 2031
(Previous period: April 1, 2019 - March 31, 2025)
The purpose of ARC-Space (*3) is to promote research in the field of space information science, which integrates space science (planetary science) and information science, through industry-academia collaboration, and to provide the results to the academic community, thereby contributing to the revitalization of research and the advancement of technological development in this field.
The Center, with the Japanese Society for Planetary Science (JSPS) as its parent academic society, was first accredited as a Center for Lunar and Planetary Exploration Archive Science by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in FY 2019 (*4), and has now been newly renewed as a Center for 6 years, from FY 2025 to FY 2030.
Lunar and planetary exploration archive science is a form of research in which new knowledge is obtained by utilizing data accumulated through past lunar and planetary exploration and observational research, and combining it with the latest knowledge and analysis techniques.
This center bridges the planetary science and information science communities through the axis of archival science, and will promote publicly solicited projects in collaboration with JAXA and ICT companies to develop and provide data and software with added new value, contributing to the elucidation of the origin and evolution of solar-system bodies.
