The "Fukushima Future Creation Program," led by the Office for Strategy of International Programs, Center for Planning and Promotion at the University of Aizu (UoA), has been honored with the Inter-University Collaboration Award by the Academia Consortium Fukushima (ACF) on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
On February 17, 2026, Mr. Hiroki Miura, Chairperson of the ACF and President of Fukushima University, visited the UoA to present the commendation. The award was presented to the Office for Strategy of International Programs in the presence of UoA Chairperson and President Tsukahara, Vice-Chairperson Iwase, and Director-General Tsurumi.
This award recognizes the program's outstanding achievements in promoting inter-university synergy and Project-Based Learning (PBL) focused on disaster revitalization and regional challenges.
Launched in AY2021, the program enables Japanese and international students to observe earthquake recovery efforts and local social issues firsthand. Its primary objective is to empower students to conceptualize "what they can do for the future of Fukushima" through their own initiative. A defining characteristic of the program is that it is conducted entirely in English, facilitating high-level intellectual exchange among a diverse student body.
The 2024 iteration of the program, held from Tuesday, December 24, to Wednesday, December 25, 2024, served as a primary factor in this recognition. Co-hosted with the Fukushima Institute for Research, Education and Innovation (F-REI), the initiative achieved unprecedented collaboration between the following institutions: Fukushima University, Fukushima Medical University, Higashi Nippon International University, National Institute of Technology (KOSEN), Fukushima College, and Futaba Future High School.
A total of 51 students and pupils from 12 countries and regions participated. The award was granted based on the successful implementation of collaborative learning that integrated various specialized fields, multiple generations, and diverse nationalities.
Senior Associate Professor Tatsuki Kawaguchi, Director of the Office for Strategy of International Programs, issued the following comment:
"This program provides a vital academic framework for the post-disaster generation. Although these students possess a historical detachment from the 2011 events, the program empowers them to approach regional revitalization and social challenges with a profound sense of personal accountability.
This recognition is a direct result of the indispensable cooperation of our local community partners and the collective dedication of all participating institutions. UoA remains steadfast in its mission to cultivate 'Glocal' talent: professionals equipped with a global perspective and a deep commitment to the sustainable advancement of our region.
UoA will continue to strengthen its alliances with ACF member institutions and external stakeholders. By enhancing its global institutional presence and nurturing the human capital essential to the future of Fukushima Prefecture, the University remains dedicated to regional prosperity.
