AY 2023 Autumn Entrance Ceremony was held

On Friday, September 29, 2023, the autumn entrance ceremony for the 2023 academic year was held. A total of 57 new students, 17 to the undergraduate school, 31 to the master's program, and 9 to the doctoral program were declared to admit by Vice President ZHAO Qiang-Fu.

Today we welcome 56 new students to the University of Aizu, including 17 new undergraduates, 31 new master's students, and 8 new doctoral students. It is our great pleasure to welcome all of you taking your first steps as new members of our university.

The University of Aizu was established in 1993, and focuses on research and education in Information and Communications Technology or ICT.

Roughly speaking, ICT has 3 parts. The soul, the skill and the body. The soul contains fundamental computing theories; the skill contains various methodologies for applying computing machines to solving various problems; and the body contains all needed technologies for constructing computing machines with various sizes, shapes, and types. Corresponding to these three parts, we have three divisions in the undergraduate school: computer science, information systems, and computer engineering. These divisions are merged and integrated in the graduate school.

When you selected the university, you should have made your decisions based on keywords like AI, data science, meta-verse, robotics, space exploration, computer vision, IoT, bio-medical informatics, advanced networking, and so on. Yes, you made a correct decision because here we have professors who are top runners in these fields, and they can help you to become educated persons in these fields, and even become experts.

If you are a graduate student, you can work immediately from now on with your supervisor, find a problem to solve, propose new solutions, conduct experiments, and present your new results at international conferences. If you are an undergraduate school student, you need to learn some basic knowledge first, but it is not necessary to finish all courses before starting research. You can contact the professor working in your interested field, join his/her research group, and start science research whenever you are ready. Do not hesitate, just try and challenge!

Here, I have two points to share with you. First, study, study, and study. This is the only way for you to become an expert who can survive in the ICT field. Study hard and master a lot of new theories and technologies is important. But this is not enough. Please try to learn from your professor "how to study" so that you can keep growing even after graduation.

Second, think, think, and think. Thinking deeply can help you to improve the language model inside your brain, and this in turn, can help you to find good answers for any given problems. The language model has been the main driven force for us to be "human" rather than animals. Language model is also the core technology for an artificial intelligent system to have general intelligent. Do not forget to think by yourselves. Never get answers from chatGPT without thinking. This way, we will continue to be human rather than machines.
