VU Quang Minh, the first-year master's student supervised by Professor Anh T. Pham(※1) at the Computer Communications Laboratory (CCL), wins the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) (※2) Tokyo Chapter 2019 Student Paper Award(※3). The award ceremony was held on April 29, 2019 at JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur during the 2019 IEEE 89th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC2019-Spring) (※4).
The IEEE VTS is composed of engineers, scientists, students, and technicians, interested in advancing the theory and practice of electrical engineering as it applies to the areas of Land Transportation, Railroad/Mass Transit, Mobile Communications, Vehicular Electrotechnology Equipment and Systems Land, Airborne and Maritime Mobile Services.
VTC is a semi-annual flagship conference of the IEEE VTS, which brought together individuals from academia, government, and industry to discuss and exchange ideals in the fields of wireless, mobile, and vehicular technology.
The conference featured world-class plenary speakers, tutorials, and technical as well as application sessions.
IEEE VTS Tokyo Chapter, a branch of VTS in Japan, provides two kinds of award: the "Student Paper Award" (for the best paper), and "Young Researcher Encouragement Award", to those papers presented in the VTC conferences and recognized as being highly qualified and novel.
VU Quang Minh wins the only "Student Paper Award" for his paper entitled "HAP-Aided Relaying Satellite FSO/QKD Systems for Secure Vehicular Networks" presented at the IEEE VTC2019-Spring. This paper belongs to on-going joint project between the CCL and Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology (PTIT)(※5), led by Prof. Anh T. Pham, to design and develop the free-space optical QKD system for secure communications in emerging wireless vehicular networks supporting UAVs and autonomous vehicles.
The project is supported by the UoA research competitive fund and Minh's travel to Kuala Lumpur to present the paper is supported by a travel grant by NEC C&C foundation(※6).
Comment from Minh: "It is my great honor and privilege to receive the IEEE 2019 Student Paper Award from the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) Tokyo Chapter. This is a huge encouragement for me. This achievement did not come immediately. I have studied and revised this work for a long time with enthusiastic and excellent guidance, both technically and mentally, from Professor Anh T. Pham, and Associate Prof. Ngoc T. Dang at PTIT when I was undergraduate student in Vietnam. I cannot get this award without their help. On this occasion, I would like to show my deep gratitude and respect to two Professors who are always patient with me and make me progress every day."
