At IEMCON, the 7th IEEE Annual Information Technology, Electornics and Mobile Communication Coneference in Vancouver (*1), Prof. Michael Cohen (*2) and his graduate student Isuru Jayarathne; Isuru won the "Best Paper Award" in the "Electromagnetics and Control System" track for their paper "Brain ID: Development of an EEG-Based Biometric Authentication System," coauthored with H K Senaka Amarakeerthi; Prof Cohen's former student and Isuru's former advisor, now at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (*3).
The paper describes using brain waves and machine learning, via convolutional neural net analysis of EEG data, to authenticate users. They plan to extend this project for Isuru's doctoral research.
