Conclusion of the general agreement with Tallinn University of Technology

On April 14, 2014, the University of Aizu (UoA) concluded the general agreement with Tallinn University of Technology (TUT) of the Republic of Estonia. UoA has concluded the agreements with 63 universities and institutions in 18 countries.

TUT is the only technical university in Estonia, which was established in 1918. They have been proactively working on joint research with universities, research institutes and companies in many different countries. TUT was ranked in the top 440-450 in the QS World University Rankings 2013. They have the collaboration agreements with 75 universities worldwide, and sign more than 200 contracts with companies and other organizations a year.

The signing ceremony was held at UoA in the presence of Ms. Tea Varrak, Vice-Rector for Innovation and Internationalization, Mr. Innar Liiv, Associate Professor of IT Faculty, Department of Informatics and Chair of Foundation of Informatics accompanied by other members from TUT. As representatives from Aizuwakamatsu City and our university, Mayor Shohei Muroi, UoA President Ryuichi Oka, and Regent/UBIC Director Jiro Iwase attended the ceremony.

President Oka said in his greeting, "I am sure that this agreement will be of much help to the revitalization of Fukushima Prefecture as industrial promotion and creation of job opportunities are expected through our collaboration." Vice Rector Varrak also made an address and said, "We will pave the way to a solid cooperation in a crucial area for both countries- e-governance and related areas, and more detailed work will follow from now to create a solid activity plan and define the goals with wider perspective." After signing the agreement, both universities exchanged commemorative gifts and took group photos. Then the explanations on the outline and objectives of the agreement were given to the attendees.

Under this agreement, TUT and UoA will collaborate in the following areas; 1) exchange of scientific, academic and technical information and material, 2) identifying the opportunities for joint research and commercialization of technology, 3) organizing of joint seminars and conferences, 4) identifying cooperation activities, involving students and staff exchange in related research projects and business innovation, and 5) joint participation in international projects, etc.
