Today we welcome the 54 new students to the University of Aizu, including 13 new undergraduates, 22 new master's students, and 19 new doctoral students. It is our great pleasure to welcome those of you taking your first steps as the newest members of our university.

However, it is truly regrettable that we are not able to celebrate your admission with your families who have supported you until today.

Universities in Japan and around the world went almost entirely to distance learning in 2020 because of COVID-19. The prolonged campus closures are affecting students' skill acquisition and mental aspects. Fortunately, at the University of Aizu, our faculty, administrative staff and students are highly conscious of infection prevention, so we have been able to hold face-to-face classes as much as possible. Over a year of pandemic experience has also improved the quality of online college classes, and new classes have begun to take advantage of their "anytime, anywhere" nature.

For those of you who chose to study computer science and engineering at the University of Aizu in this "new normal" era, I would like you to acquire the knowledge and abilities needed to solve problems even in difficult situations that humankind has never experienced before. I believe that the knowledge and abilities you will acquire at university will make your future bright.

In our university, you can study every kind of Information and Communications Technology or ICT, including AI, IoT, Big Data analysis, and robotics.

The Japanese government is promoting Society 5.0, a concept for a human-centric future society. In society, our real world is highly integrated with the cyberspace constructed with computers and the Internet that mirrors it. Everything in our daily lives is naturally supported by such a digitalized society. Of course, ICT is a key to realizing Society 5.0, and our university is expected to produce the cutting-edge technologies and specialists that will contribute to its realization.

We offer a highly international environment on our campus with many international faculty members and students from all over the world. Since its establishment, our university has produced a wide variety of research results and talented ICT scientists and engineers.

The door to the promising world of ICT has been opened to you today. I hope that you will lead a fulfilling student life by polishing your intelligence and humanity at our university.

Once again, congratulations on your admission, and welcome to the University of Aizu.

October 1, 2021
MIYAZAKI Toshiaki,
President of the University of Aizu
