Tracking Clouds and Rain with low cost GPS chips

GPS (Global Positioning System)は測位・航法の技術として最も使われています。同時に、GPS信号は科学技術へも応用されています。
その一つが雨雲の追跡です。この技術は、大気中の水蒸気によってGPS信号は遅延を受けるという事実に基づいています。研究室では、
低コストのGPSチップによる雨雲の追跡技術を探求しています。この研究は福島再生可能エネルギー研究所(http://www.aist.go.jp/fukushima/)との共同研究でもあります。高性能・低性能を含むいくつかの受信機はFREAに設置済みです。研究はそれらの受信機で得られたデータの相互比較、
そして水蒸気量を雨雲へマッピングする機械学習アルゴリズムの開発を含みます。

インド洋ダイポール現象

インド洋ダイポール現象は地球全体の気候に影響する気候現象であり、正と負の符号がある異常変動です。正のインド洋ダイポール現象が発生するとインド洋東部の海面水温が平年よりも下がり、その後すぐに西部の海面水温が上がります。こうした水温の変化によって対流活動がインド洋の東部から西部に大きく移動し、インド洋の東部では干ばつ、西部では水害が発生します。

私たちは、コンピュータモデルを用いてインド洋ダイポール現象が発生するメカニズムを研究しています。研究内容は、インド洋ダイポール現象のダイナミクス、同現象が地球全体の気候に与える影響、同現象とエルニーニョ・南方振動との相互作用の仕組みなどです。

環境情報の管理と予測のための計算

〇この研究の目的は、コンピュータサイエンスと情報技術とを駆使して、自然環境との共存を意識しながら、快適な、そして便利な、かつ持続可能な社会を実現することです。その一環として私たちは最先端の計算技術を用いて福島県、特に会津地方の天候と気候を正確にシミュレーションし、予報することを試みます。

〇これにより、悪天候により受ける被害を低く抑え、また、有利な気象条件を最大限に利用することが可能となるでしょう。情報技術を革新的に利用する方法を検討し、環境情報をより良く理解し、かつ最大限に利用出来る社会の実現を目指します。環境のモニタリングと管理のための安価でスマートな多機能なセンサーを開発することも私たちの計画に含まれています。
